When there is sufficient tooth structure left - a filling can be placed in the tooth .A crown is usually advised where the tooth structure left is weak and would benefit from a full coverage crown. After a full assessment it is possible change your metal fillings to white fillings. This can improve the overall appearance and health of your teeth. Many people decide to wait until their amalgam filling needs replacing, whereas others choose to go ahead and replace them immediately. Your dentist can advise you on this.
-
White composites filling will match your natural tooth colour and brighten your smile. They are bonded to the tooth which makes more durable. White fillings don’t have the same potential environmental or health risk posed by the mercury in amalgam fillings. They also cause less stress fractures resulting in a longer lasting filling and less broken teeth!
White fillings also require less preparation as all the materials used are bonded to the tooth – therefore they are less destructive of the natural tooth tissue compared to metal fillings!
-
Technology has moved rapidly in the last decade and white fillings are now much stronger and teeth with white fillings are less prone to cracking.
-
White composite fillings harden very quickly so there is no harm if you resume eating and drinking immediately after treatment. However if you have had a local anaesthetic administered you will be advised to wait until this has worn off before eating.
Occasionally there is some sensitivity to hot, cold and pressure for a short time after a filling is placed. This is normal and will reduce over time.
