Teeth Whitening
Stockbridge Dental Practice provide affordable tooth whitening service, ideal if you’re looking for an experienced and trusted dentist near you in Edinburgh.
We can help you achieve a brighter smile with our Blancone teeth whitening treatment.
There are many reasons why teeth can discolour. A detailed consultation with your dentist will help to establish the cause in order to recommend the most suitable and effective way to lighten your teeth.
Whether we are simply removing surface staining, or using clinically proven products to whiten your natural teeth from within, we can advise you on the safest way to achieve predictable, lasting results.
In Edinburgh’s Stockbridge Dental Practice we tailor tooth whitening to meet each patients expectations and needs. We offer a consultation to discuss the options further and find out the best type of tooth whitening for you.
We have 3 different levels of tooth whitening available at the practice:
1 - BlancOne Click - 10 minute in surgery tooth whitening carried out following your hygienist visit to gently lift the shade of your teeth by 1-2 shades. Great for maintenance or top up for patients who have already completed a course of tooth whitening.
2 - BlancOne Touch - 3 x 10 minute in surgery tooth whitening carried out in 1 session following your hygienist visit to gently lift the shade of your teeth by 4-5 shades. A good option for patients who want to improve the shade of their teeth but do not want to or unable to carry out home tooth whitening.
3 - Home Tooth Whitening Kit - The introduction kit includes full upper and lower tooth whitening trays and tooth whitening gels. Additional gels can be purchased for a discounted rate if you have already completed a course of tooth whitening with us. Multiple shade increases can be achieved with the end result being tailored to the shade you would like to achieve.
We also offer ICON treatment in combination with tooth whitening to eliminate white spots/dark spots and early decay.

Our top FAQ’s about tooth whitening
-
We recommend waiting 30 minutes to an hour before you eat or drink following a whitening procedure. It is also advised to refrain from any foods/drinks that would stain a white shirt for 24-48 hours post-whitening!
Useful tips like using a straw when drinking your coffee to limit direct contact with the teeth will also help prevent stains in future to give you a long-lasting white smile. Rinsing with water immediately after will also help!
-
Tea and coffee
There is a substance in tea and coffee called tannins – as they build up on the tooth surface they can drastically darken the teeth over time. This is especially so when the teeth are more porous following whitening treatment.
Red wine
As well as having a dark pigment which can stain the teeth, red wine (and white) are highly acidic which can contribute to additional sensitivity post-whitening.
Dark fruits and veg (e.g. blackberries, pomegranate and beetroot)
Again, due to darker pigments in these fruits and vegetables – it is smart to avoid these foods for 24-48 hours following any whitening procedure.
Other richly pigmented + acidic foods to avoid include:
Tomato-based sauces
Citrus fruits
Sugary snacks
Fizzy/acidic drinks
Foods with added colours/dyes

How long tooth whitening lasts is dependent on a multitude of factors – some of which include:
- The type of treatment carried out (e.g. home kit/in chair)
- How well you look after your teeth at home (e.g. brushing and flossing habits)
- Lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking and excessive coffee drinking)
Everyone is different therefore whitening results can range anywhere from several months to 3 years!
You can prevent stains and darkening of the teeth by:
- Practicing excellent oral hygiene at home
- Hygiene visits to remove surface stains
- Drinking water regularly after meals
- Avoiding richly coloured foods (e.g. dark fruits, red wine and coffee)
- Using straw when drinking any beverages that are dark in colour

After in chair whitening with either our BlancOne Touch or Click service, it is recommended to wait at least 3 months before repeating or topping up the procedure.
As for our home kit, once you have finished the recommended duration of the course, you can top up anytime to brighten up your smile before an important event or whenever you feel like it!
-
Everyone’s teeth will react differently to tooth whitening gel but you can expect to boost your smile at least 2-3 shades!
Your dentist can also recommended changing which whitening gel/procedure to find what works best for you!
-
Some transient sensitivity is perfectly normal after any whitening procedure. Professional tooth whitening does not damage the teeth in any way – the sensitivity is due to the enamel being slightly more porous but this will return to normal after a day or so. Some sensitive toothpaste will also help reduce post-whitening sensitivity (Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief TM and Sensodyne Pronamel Daily Protection are some great options we’d recommend).

The General Dental Council (GDC) states that you must be 18 years of age to have any professional tooth whitening treatment.
